Voicemail to Text on Android
On Android, voicemail transcription lives in whichever app handles your voicemail — the Google Phone app on Pixels and most stock phones, Samsung's own Visual Voicemail on Galaxy, or your carrier's app. Find yours below.
Google Phone app (Pixel and most Android phones)
- Open the Phone app → ⋮ (top right) → Settings → Voicemail.
- Make sure Visual voicemail is on. If the toggle is missing, your carrier hasn't enabled it for your plan.
- Turn on Voicemail transcription. Some carriers also show Transcription analysis — it sends audio to Google to improve accuracy; leave it off if you'd rather not.
- New voicemails appear in the Voicemail tab with text underneath. Older ones aren't transcribed retroactively.
Samsung Galaxy
Galaxy phones use the Samsung Visual Voicemail app on some carriers and the Google app on others. Open the Phone app → Voicemail tab: if you land in a Samsung-styled inbox, transcription is under ⋮ → Settings → Voicemail to Text (carrier-dependent). Full walk-through: voicemail to text on Samsung.
Carrier apps
| Carrier | Where transcription is |
|---|---|
| Verizon | Verizon Visual Voicemail app → Settings → Voicemail to Text (Premium add-on on some plans). |
| AT&T | AT&T Visual Voicemail app → transcription included on most postpaid plans. |
| T-Mobile | T-Mobile Visual Voicemail app → Settings → Voicemail to Text; on newer plans it's inside the Google Phone app instead. |
| Google Fi | Transcription is on by default in the Fi app and Google Phone app. |
Google Voice (any Android)
If your voicemail goes to a Google Voice number, transcripts are automatic — in the Voice app under Voicemail and by email if you enable it. Details: Google Voice voicemail transcription.
When the text doesn't show up
- "Transcript not available" on one message — the audio was too quiet, too short, or in an unsupported language. Save the recording (tap the voicemail → ⋮ → Save) and run it through the upload tool.
- No transcripts at all — Visual Voicemail isn't provisioned. Phone app → Settings → Voicemail → toggle Visual voicemail off and on; if that fails, your carrier has to enable it. See the troubleshooting guide.
Have a recording that still needs transcribing?
Save the voicemail as a file (share → Save) and drop it into the voicemail-to-text tool — one a day is free, any language, with English translation if you need it.
