Voicemail to Text Not Working

Voicemail transcription fails in a handful of predictable ways. Work down this list — the first three cover most cases.

1. Transcription isn't included in your plan

Visual Voicemail (seeing a list of messages) and transcription (reading them) are separate carrier features. Prepaid and budget plans often have the first without the second. Check: AT&T "Voicemail to Text", Verizon "Premium Visual Voicemail", T-Mobile "Voicemail to Text". If it's an add-on, no phone setting will make text appear.

2. Visual Voicemail isn't provisioned

Symptom: the Voicemail tab dials a number instead of showing a list. Fix: toggle Airplane mode; on iPhone Reset Network Settings; on Android Phone → Settings → Voicemail → Visual voicemail off and on. If it stays dead, the carrier has to re-provision it.

3. The message is in another language

Carrier and Google Voice transcription is English-only (a few carriers add Spanish). A Spanish, Chinese or Vietnamese voicemail comes out blank or as nonsense. Save the audio and use the translate-voicemail tool, which detects the language and adds an English translation.

4. Phone language or region unsupported

iPhone Live Voicemail and carrier transcription follow the phone's language setting. Set to a supported language (English US is always safe) under Settings → General → Language & Region.

5. "Transcription not available" on one message only

Audio too quiet, too short, music on hold, or a robocall. This is the engine declining, not a bug. Run that message through the upload tool; a heavier model on clean 8 kHz audio usually gets it.

6. Transcripts arrive late or not at all after a phone change

New phone or SIM swap: Visual Voicemail must re-register. Restart with the SIM inserted; on iPhone also open the Voicemail tab once on cellular data (not Wi-Fi) so it can provision.

7. Carrier app vs Phone app conflict (Android)

Two voicemail apps fighting for the same mailbox — e.g. T-Mobile Visual Voicemail plus Google Phone. Disable notifications in one, or uninstall the carrier app if the Phone app does the job.

8. Live Voicemail toggled off (iPhone)

iOS 17+: Settings → Phone → Live Voicemail. It's off after some iOS updates and after Screen Time restrictions are applied.

9. Wi-Fi Calling / VPN

Some carriers only deliver Visual Voicemail data over the cellular network. Turn Wi-Fi off briefly, or disable the VPN, and check whether messages and transcripts catch up.

Still nothing?

Forward the voicemail to your email (most carrier apps and phones can) and drop the attachment in the voicemail-to-text tool — it works on any voicemail file, from any carrier, one free per day.

Have a recording that still needs transcribing?

Save the voicemail as a file (share → Save) and drop it into the voicemail-to-text tool — one a day is free, any language, with English translation if you need it.
